One of the best things of summer is to go strawberry picking. This beautiful fruit is great to eat straight from the bush. If you are lucky enough to know where to find wild ones, you might want to keep their location a secret.
Good places to look are amongst grassy woodlands and near derelict properties, where cultivated varieties have escaped into the wild.
If you start your search in early spring, look for the flowers and remember their location and come back after a month to check on them. Once the petals have dropped it is only a few weeks until they turn into fruit.
The wild strawberry is much smaller then the one you find in Pick-Your-Own fields and not quite as sweet. But if you find them, the kudos is much greater.
Even an afternoon picking your own strawberries at a local pick your own farm is like a mini foraging trip. Especially if you try a few straight from the bush…
