Here are some of the best places to pan for gold in Scotland.
Helmsdale, North East Scotland
On the North Eastern coast of Scotland the River Helmsdale and especially the Kildonan Burn carry gold. Located at the site of Baile an Or a stretch of the Burn is open to anyone to pan for gold for a maximum of two weeks a year. Free camping is available and panners are required to leave their details in a box in the shelter.Contact the Suisgill Estate for more information.
Glendevon, Scotland
Look for places along the river where the water slows down noticeably, such as behind sandbars or large rocks, these are usually good spots for panning. The British Geological survey found gold in this area in the 70’s.
Perthshire Hills
There has been significant discoveries of gold right across the Perthshire hills. There are many places to discover new caches.
Tyndrum, Scotland
Tyndrum has an already established gold mine, but with the price of gold rocketing you too can get a piece of the action.
Crawford Moor, East of Sanquhar, Scotland
From a very early period gold has been found and worked in this area of Scotland. There are records dating as far back as the time of James I, when there were discoveries of nuggets from 2grammes to 30oz.
