Back story
I lived in North Wales at the time, probably one of the most beautiful places in the UK. So when I got back from my road trip, instead of studying for my GCSE’s and A-levels I discovered the outdoors and went climbing.
Even though I spent the best part of my school years dangling from a rope on the side of a cliff, I managed to get into university and then get a job in London’s media industry. I did well, had three children and got married.
We had a nice house with a garden in North West London, but it took an hour to drive the four miles to nursery and we spent all our money putting the kids in childcare, only spending 15 minutes with them before bed. So when our youngest daughter was 6 months old, I decided to give the business up, and we moved out of London to the Yorkshire countryside.
The change in pace of life was completely different and we found ourselves spending much more time in the evenings and weekends outside fishing, sailing, exploring, building dens and going on bike rides. The kids spent time at Forest School as part of their nursery education and loved learning to forage, explore the outdoors safely and make bows and arrows.
The Mighty Eagle was born during a three-week road trip across France. My 4 year old son and I were sea fishing in Argeles in the South, not catching anything but just throwing bait into the sea and talking. I thought back to my childhood and realised that I would have loved it if my Dad had taken the time off work to do this. He was always too busy trying to make money to send me to school and make sure I was educated. But I think he missed the point – school can only educate you so much but it’s the experiences that life gives you that teach you more.
So the Mighty Eagle is a response to all this. Our aim is to get families spending time outdoors having fun. All our kits are hand made, our ideas are hand fashioned and all the articles hand written.
We hope you have fun and get lots from our site.
